There are usually 3 different options for breast reconstruction: tissue expanders and an implant (silicone), a “flap” (using tissue from another part of your body) or combining both techniques into one surgical procedure.
Breast reconstruction often involves several operations like nipple-areola complex reconstruction, in order to obtain the best outcome possible.
The majority of breast reconstruction procedures are performed under general anaesthesia and the recovery time varies depending on each case.
A reconstructed breast will not look the same as the one it is meant to replace; there will be slight differences in size and shape, and it will lack the sensation of the breast or the nipple, however it is usually beneficial to the patient’s psychological state. As is understandable, choosing whether or not to have breast reconstruction is a very personal decision. Each patient is unique therefore requires special consultation to make sure that both the reconstruction process is understood and the expectations of the end result are realistic.
